Expanding Far Away

There is so much more space to explore. Far Away’s eight missions scratched the surface of what’s out there, but we have always wanted to revisit the universe. We have hinted at an expansion for years. We even shared the mechanics for a major plot point. Now that Hair of the Dog is on shelves, it is time to take stock of where we are at on the Far Away expansion and share that with all of you.

The goal of the expansion is to continue the trend in most Far Away missions: mess with a mechanic. We want to experiment with other ways players can use the pieces and rules. How can we make a new terrain type that changes exploration? How can a new creature behavior system impact the strategy? My personal favorite expansions don’t simply add more content; they change how you use the core rules (for the record, Tiny Towns: Fortune is my favorite expansion for any game). We want the new missions to introduce new ways to play, with the hope that you will retry older missions with the new systems.

Aspirations aside, our tangible progress is that we have created three new missions and scripted two more. We also have laid out the overarching story. Unlike the base game, there is a narrative connecting some of the expansion missions. It revolves around dealing with a massive corporation, as only an ineffective government bureaucracy can. The players join the Corporate Espionage division and try to thwart their rivals producing mind-controlling nanobots. We are putting as much love into Conglomerated Enterprises as we do for the Federation Alliance.

A new artist, Lee Marion, is joining us to bring the new worlds to life. We’ve worked with Lee and her art collective, Cobra Baby, before and are excited to collaborate on space corporations and weird aliens. Expect new terrain, creatures, and propaganda posters with the expansion.

Once we get enough missions for a public preview, we’ll showcase them as a print-and-play. Beyond that, we’ll eventually bring the game to a crowdfunding platform. This expansion is our primary focus now, so expect more news soon.
